The Name "Linux"
Linus Torvalds originally wanted to call it "Freax" (a mix of "free", "freak", and "x" for Unix). His friend Ari Lemmke, who hosted the FTP server, thought the name was too silly and named the directory "Linux" instead. The name stuck.
Tux the Penguin
The Linux mascot Tux was inspired by a penguin that bit Linus Torvalds at a zoo in Canberra, Australia. He joked that the bite gave him "penguinitis" — a condition that made him think about penguins constantly. Larry Ewing designed Tux in 1996 using GIMP.
It Runs the World
Linux powers over 96% of the world's top 1 million web servers, all of the top 500 supercomputers, the entire Android ecosystem (3+ billion devices), the International Space Station, Tesla cars, and the Mars Ingenuity helicopter.
The Biggest Collaboration
The Linux kernel is the largest collaborative software project in history. Over 20,000 developers from 1,700+ companies have contributed. The kernel has over 30 million lines of code and receives ~10,000 patches per release.

There are over 600 active Linux distributions. Some are general-purpose (Ubuntu, Fedora), others are highly specialized — like Kali Linux for security testing, SteamOS for gaming, or Tails for privacy. New ones are created every month.
Born in a Dorm Room
Linux started as a hobby project by 21-year-old Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in 1991. His famous Usenet post began: "I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu)." Oops.
Hollywood Runs on Linux
Major studios like Pixar, DreamWorks, Weta Digital, and Industrial Light & Magic use Linux render farms to create blockbuster visual effects. Movies like Avatar, The Lord of the Rings, and every Marvel film were rendered on Linux clusters.
The Wedding Kernel
The Linux kernel changelog for version 6.0 included a commit that simply read "Merge tag 'random-6.0-rc1'." Behind the scenes, kernel development never sleeps — Linus even merges patches on Christmas Day and his birthday.
Android = Linux
Every Android phone runs the Linux kernel. Google modified the kernel with extras like Binder IPC and the Android-specific HAL. So if someone says "nobody uses Linux on the desktop" — well, billions carry it in their pocket daily.
Microsoft ❤️ Linux
Microsoft, once calling Linux "a cancer", is now one of its biggest contributors. They run Azure on Linux, created WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), acquired GitHub, and even released VS Code as open source. Times change.
The Kernel is Tiny-ish
The very first Linux kernel (0.01) was only 10,239 lines of code. Today it has over 30 million. Despite its size, a minimally configured kernel can still boot in under a second — faster than most BIOS screens.
Everything is a File
In Linux, almost everything is represented as a file — devices (/dev), processes (/proc), system info (/sys), even random numbers (/dev/urandom). This elegant design philosophy makes Linux incredibly flexible and scriptable.
Uptimes of Years
Linux servers can run for years without rebooting. The unofficial record is over 6 years of continuous uptime. With live kernel patching (like Canonical's Livepatch), even security updates don't require a restart anymore.
Free as in Freedom
Linux is licensed under GPLv2 — meaning anyone can view, modify, and distribute the source code. This license ensures that improvements must also be shared back with the community. Richard Stallman's GNU project made this possible.
